Since it was established 70 years ago, the NHS has pioneered a golden era in the advancement of patient care, seen life expectancy for men and women increase by more than 10 years and infant mortality reduce from 34 in 1,000 births to 5*.
The modern NHS is a massive and complex organisation and the source of great deal of national pride, ranking as the best of 11 well-off countries by the Commonwealth Fund in 2017. Of course the annual cost of the NHS per head has increased since its establishment; from £200 in 1948 to £1,700 today* and the number of service it offers has grown significantly too.
